Captains Log: Week 1

Week one was a success. I’ve lost 5.1 lbs and have 2 very sore legs. This week was filled with lots of Healthy Choice meals and slow out of breath workouts. I remember back when a 10-mile hike and sub 10-minute mile was easy breezy, but this was humbling. I went on a hike with Kate and Paul this weekend without thinking how it would feel at my current weight. This hike was filled with lots of curse words and sitting. I used to wake up the next day without missing a beat after a hike. However, this hike hit me like a ton of bricks. My hips, calves, thighs, butt, core and ego are still hurting. I know this is week one, but I want to be back the way I was years ago with a six-pack, suckin’ down protein shakes and giving “tips” to whomever would listen. Getting back in the groove was easy.  The hard part is going to be keeping it up and not get discouraged when it gets hard,  and it will get hard.

Week 1—Ugh, I hate “dieting.”

Well, I lost 5.4 lbs this week, and I whined every step of the way!  I’m seriously not pleasant to be around when I start a diet.  Actually, I turn psycho!  Just be glad you weren’t around me, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who was!

I would be lying if I said I was super strict this week.  I had some Dippin’ Dots one day (actually that was Day 2), and I was so desperate for a simple carb the other night that I ate a slice of plain white bread.  It.was.delicious. Today has been the best day of “dieting” so far this week.

I say “dieting” because I’m not really on a certain diet.  I’m simply trying to be mindful of portion sizes, not eating out so much, getting plenty of protein, and cutting my carbs.

Since I’m only capable of tackling one major change at a time, I’ve not done great with the exercise this week.   The burpee challenge has been all of my physical activity, aside from a 4-mile run with Bobby.  One thing I know for sure is that I HATE burpees!!!!!  Day 1 was my favorite—5 burpees, no problem!  Now that I’m up to 30 burpees, it’s pretty much impossible for me to do the “real” thing.  I’ve been modifying them using my coffee table.  I’m not sure it still counts, but it does get my heart rate up, so that’s something.

I’ll keep trying to conquer the diet mountain and slowly regain the level of fitness I once had (and that wasn’t very much!).  For all my friends participating in the New Year New Me Challenge, let me know how your week has been!
